The national number sets the story; your region sets your bill. West Coast usually runs high, Gulf Coast low — price your lanes off the column that matches your windshield.

Because of how fuel tax follows your miles across state lines, the number on the sign lies — what matters is the pump price minus that state's fuel tax. Two stops fifty miles apart can look forty cents different on the billboard and be nearly even underneath. Fuel cards quote it net for a reason.

Where the tax bites

State diesel taxes run from roughly 20¢ a gallon at the cheap end to 75¢+ at the top — a spread worth about 8¢ a mile at 6.5 mpg on where you fill. Rankings hold steady year to year; exact rates move, so verify current numbers before you plan a fuel route.
